Protect Your Smile with Nightguards from Vernon Family Dentists

At Vernon Family Dentists, we understand the importance of maintaining a healthy and comfortable smile, even while you sleep. Nightguards are a simple yet effective solution for those who suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding) or clenching. These custom-fitted oral appliances are designed to protect your teeth from the damaging effects of grinding and clenching, ensuring you wake up feeling refreshed and pain-free.

What Are Nightguards?

Nightguards are custom-made oral devices that you wear while you sleep. They are typically made from a durable, comfortable material that fits snugly over your upper or lower teeth. The primary function of a nightguard is to create a barrier between your upper and lower teeth, preventing them from coming into direct contact and reducing the pressure and wear caused by grinding and clenching.

Why Do People Need Nightguards?

  • Prevent Tooth Damage: Teeth grinding can lead to enamel erosion, cracked or chipped teeth, and even tooth loss. A nightguard helps protect your teeth from these damaging effects.
  • Reduce Jaw Pain: Bruxism can cause significant jaw pain, headaches, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Wearing a nightguard can alleviate these symptoms and promote a more comfortable sleep.
  • Improve Sleep Quality: By reducing the physical stress on your jaw and teeth, nightguards can help you achieve more restful and uninterrupted sleep.

How Long Do Nightguards Last?

With proper care, a nightguard can last for several years. The lifespan of a nightguard depends on various factors, including the frequency of use, the intensity of grinding, and how well you maintain the device. Regular check-ups with your dentist can help ensure your nightguard continues to fit properly and remains effective.

Maintenance Tips for Your Nightguard

  • Clean After Each Use: Rinse your nightguard with cool water and a soft-bristled toothbrush after each use. Avoid using hot water, as it can warp the material.
  • Store Properly: Keep your nightguard in a clean, dry case when not in use. This helps prevent bacteria growth and keeps the guard in good condition.
  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Do not use harsh chemicals or toothpaste to clean your nightguard, as they can damage the material. Mild soap and water are sufficient.
  • Regular Check-Ups: Schedule regular check-ups with your dentist to ensure your nightguard is still fitting properly and to address any issues early.
